Grad students can have their master degree funded by applying for scholarships
Students in grad school can finally have a taste of “free education” by applying to a full fellowship of grant
If you’ve recently graduated from a traditional or distance learning bachelor program, you’re probably wondering now – is grad school really worth it? The financial reason is the first that pops into mind when considering to pursue an offline or online masters degree. But are there any other rationales for deciding to spend another two years in college?
Of course there are. For starters, you will be able to deepen your knowledge of a subject you love. By the time you arrive in graduate school, you should enjoy the subject you’re pursuing. If you love history, an offline or online master degree will give you a chance to learn as much as you can about it.
Furthermore, on average grad courses are considered to be a lot of better than undergraduate courses. Traditional or distance learning bachelor programs are required to take General Education Courses (GECs) which are usually unrelated to their majors. Grad school offers more specialized courses.
Most importantly – you could finally experience education for free. Many graduate programs offer stipends or scholarships. Not to mention third party institutions are also interested to offer sponsorships for master degree students. Here’s an interesting example for students who have a passion for archaeology.
Enter the “M. Woodruff Fellowship” which represents a pre- or post-doctoral fellowship to study archeology and classical studies, awarded by the Archeological Institute of America and American Academy in Rome.
The fellowship which is worth $10,000 is meant to support the student’s tuition, as well as living costs for a year of study abroad (in Italy). In order to apply, master students need to be American citizens with a deep knowledge and passion for the field of archeology. In their application, which should be sent directly to the American Academy in Rome – candidates have to outline an archeological research project they would like to pursue.
The awardee is expected to report to the Chair of the AIA Fellowship Committee and the President of AAR.
With a master degree in your field of choice under your belt, you will become more appealing to employees looking for specialists in the domain. Generally, these job opportunities will be accompanied by a higher salary. And since for most people, it is desirable to work in the highest skill level of their field, a grad degree opens a door for that.
Some jobs actually require you to have a grad degree listed on your resume. While there’s a never-ending debate on whether you should invest more time and money in order to get a specific job, if you’ve been dreaming since childhood that you will pursue a certain profession, you will have to enroll with a master degree eventually.
Last but not least, don’t forget grad school offers a great chance to grow intellectually. While financial benefits are often cited as the one of the main reasons for pursuing a master degree, we tend to overlook the advantage of overall cognitive development yielded by the extra education all too often.
