Pay for your studies with the Horizons Scholarship
Women have more opportunities than man to get a scholarship, case in point they can apply to the Horizon Scholarship for women pursuing a degree in defense
Scholarships are traditional meant to offer support to those who have had to face obstacles on their road to a higher degree. Historically, women have been the minority in the educational landscape and we’re confronted with many hardships before gaining acceptance in the space.
A study published by the Ohio State University reached some interesting conclusions: since women make on average 81% of what their male counterpart makes, acquiring a higher education degree is more important to the former segment.
The same study found that women fare worse off without a college degree than males, which is why females are more willing to consider loans or go into grater debt for a degree. Basically a diploma can translate into a much higher starting salary.
Educational institutions seem to be aware of this unbalance in the working environment, so they are doing everything in their power to support female students looking to get an education. Not only colleges and universities have adopted this tactic, but foundations and third-party institutions, as well. Google, for example, is famous for its efforts meant to bring more women into STEM.
Now if you too are a female student who has enrolled with an offline or distance learning program, you should be aware of the many scholarship opportunities available for you. Some offline or online colleges might offer gender-specific grants, but you’ll find the majority are awarded by institutions and organizations like Google.
These scholarships are a great way to fund your traditional or distance learning efforts, so even before you start researching offline or online colleges you should make a point to discover what scholarships for female students are available out there.
To get you started in your search, we’ll share a pretty note-worthy example. Awarded by Women in Defense, a National Security Organization, the Horizons Scholarship offers $500+ in financial aid to women looking to pursue a career in national security and defense.
In order to be considered for the grant you have to be a female student who is enrolled with an accredited university, full-time or part-time, at the undergraduate or graduate level.
Applicants need to be pursuing a degree in one of these fields: security studies, military history, government relations, engineering, computer science, cyber security, physics, mathematics, business (as it relates to national security or defense), law (as it relates to national security or defense), international relations, political science, and economics
A minimum GPA of 3.25 is required to apply for this grant, as well as being in financial need. Furthermore, candidates are expected to include two letters of recommendation in their applications, as well as an essay (no longer than 750 words) which answers three pre-defined questions.
If you’re reading this article right now, you should know this year’s deadline for the Horizons Scholarship has passed (July 1). Even if that’s the case, you can make a note of this scholarship and come revisit it next year.
